TURKEY RED
An example of the ubiquitous Turkey Red seamless axminster carpet, produced from the late Victorian era to the present day. Almost every carpet company had at least one Turkey Red design in it's range to bring the 'look' of oriental carpets to the 'masses'.

The machine stitched carpets are produced on a computerised sewing machine.
The machine has a maximum stitching size of 6 x 7.75 ins and 28 stitches per ins. This means that some of the larger carpets cannot be machine stitched.
Because they are stitched in machine embroidery cotton the colours may not match the hand stitched carpets exactly.
Even on a sewing machine the larger carpets take up to 14 hours to stitch and involve constant monitoring and the cutting of thread floats between stitching each colour.
