Foundation Piecing probably dates from the 17th Century and began as a method to use the good bits of worn and/or damaged fabrics, even in the most affluent homes. The technique of Foundation Piecing involves stitching the patchwork fabric, from the back, onto a foundation fabric printed with the design block. The individual blocks are then sewn together to the required pattern. This allows for designs with much smaller pieces to be stitched than with English Patchwork, and for different weight/thickness of fabric to be used. All design names are taken from "The Collector's Dictionary of QUILT NAMES & PATTERNS" unless otherwise stated.
