FLORAL NEEDLEWORK
An English needlework carpet from C1740 at the height of the flowering of this technique. The floral images were influenced by Dutch flower paintings and imported Indian calicos and chintzes.

MACHINE STITCHED

The machine stitched carpets are produced on a computerised sewing machine.
The machine has a maximum stitching size of 6 x 7.75 ins and 28 stitches per ins. This means that some of the larger carpets cannot be machine stitched.
Because they are stitched in machine embroidery cotton the colours may not match the hand stitched carpets exactly.
Even on a sewing machine the larger carpets take up to 14 hours to stitch and involve constant monitoring and the cutting of thread floats between stitching each colour.
